Even though I am a rocksolid Christian and my dad is a pastor, we both laughed histairically (HOW DO YOU SPELL THAT?!) at this.

This is blasphemy!

Not for the Jesus stuff, but because the guy keeps referring to The Doctor as "Doctor Who". That's not his name.

Draco18s said...

So much yes.

Jesscowing said...

Or, you could just say that the "The" is implied and he forgot a comma. "[The] Doctor, who will save us from the Dalek invasion of 2168". :)

Sir Mildred said...

I don't think he's saying it is the Doctor that will save us, but rather it is the TV Show itself! Much like how it isn't really Jesus who will save us, but the Bible itself will.

I just want to go against the atheistic grain here and declare this cartoon to be Metaphysically Comforting.

Great comic strip. As a die hard Whovian, whom has folled every uncarnation, I have to say this rocks.

Jesus is always coming back as an archetype. You should maybe find a personal Jesus, somebody you think possesses the quality of a "messiah."

Unknown said...

Some "thing" would be more appropriate, actually. Doctor Who doesn't let the world down, after all.

SilverPixieFly said...

I find your arguments to be very thought provoking. And not just because I am a Who fan.

Fantastic!

I own a Holy Bible and I keep it on the shelf with all my other fiction.

Calvin & Hobbes cereal ftw.

Citizen Alan said...

Scarlioni?!? Please! That was Scaroth, the last of the Jagaroth! Scarlioni was just one of his false identities. If you're going to quote Holy Scripture, at least quote it accurately! :)

Nick said...

Nice Calvin and Hobbes reference! (chocolate covered sugar bombs) :-D

Well, as a Christian and Whovian... My kudos, it was one of the funniest Doctor Who cartoons I have ever seen! Amazing!

Ahab said...

I've got to admit ... his arguments make a lot of sense!

I'll pass this along to a friend of mine who adores Dr. Who. He'll love it.

Andrew Singleton said...

Christian here.

I endorse this comic and find it completely and totally awesome.

'When he comes back eight more times then we'll talk'

Uh we're on Doc's 11th generation now.

Wait. Bad thought.

Valeyard's due to show up.

Brilliant! Freaking brilliant! Next time the Jehovah's Witnesses or any other door-to-door religion salesman tries to get me to buy their product, I'll use this!

this hurt my funnybone. i'm going to sue.

Jenny Trout said...

Is there a hell for Whovians who commit such canon mistakes as in this comic? IS THERE?

But it was still hilarious. Bravo.

SilentLaughter said...

@Andrew - yes we're on the 11th right now, but see the copyright on the bottom of the comic? It was written in 2007, at which point we were all enjoying the billowing coat of the 10th doctor. That makes the numbers add up properly - yes Jesus came back from death once, but the Doctor (at time of publishing) came back eight more times than that, making a total of nine regens, making him the 10th Doctor. See? All is right with the world.

Love this. Thank you.

There are some who believe that Jesus walks among us today in unknown form... he could be anybody, look like anybody... doing good for humanity. I think we know that this means, don't we?

Doug A Scott said...

Speaking as somebody who identifies as Christian... this was deeply awesome.

TMReeves said...

Yep. The messiah continues to be a popular figure in our culture. Anyone, I feel, who is irked by the parallels between The Doctor and Jesus Christ has missed the point of both Doctor Who and the Holy Bible by a long-shot.

It is cool. Cartoons are cool.

Fundamentalists ay? Envangelicals, Whoovians, Trekkies, Jehovahs Witnesses, Pottheads, who can tell them apart? They all need reality testing. :) And don't get me started on those weird Twilight tweenies...

Frater SG said...

The difference is that Evangelical types (of any sect, religion or world-view) insist that you MUST accept their perspective. Whoovians, Trekkies, etc... have an emotional investment in a show, story and ideology, but they do not insist that all must conform. Evangelical Atheists are of the opinion that, if you believe in a God you're an idiot. You must conform to their world view. Evangelican Christians are the same way... except with the history of slaughtering millions of non-believers. Loving a story, following an ideology or being a "Fan" are nowhere near the same thing as an Evangelist.

Another Whovian Christian LMAO!

If you are either or both of the above and don't think this is funny, you need to get a life.

Wiccan Whovian... And I endorse this message. ^_^

Nose snorts and uncontrollable laughter. Loved this one. Especially the comment about "Jesus Fanfic!" LMAO

What a WHOOT!

It's a Police Box. Phone booths are red.

As a "practicing" "Evangelical atheist", I'm willing to spend hours attempting to convince one of the god-squad that s/he is a practicing idiot, but I don't lose any sleep if the godbot decides to continue on hir way. I do this for the fun of it, and there are billions more where that one came from.

xanthian.

As a Catholic, all I have to say is...THIS HAD ME DYING WITH LAUGHTER!!! OMG IT'S TOO FUNNY!! But on a serious note, why does he keep calling The Doctor "Doctor Who?" IT'S THE DOCTOR! YOU RESPECT THAT! RESPECT IT AND LOVE IT!

Seriously happy a friend posted this on my FB. Love it!

Haha, I'm definitely ready to accept the Doctor as my personal Time Lord and Savior. :D

I'm a Christian and am in no ways offended. People of "faith" should have enough faith to laugh at their belief's short-comings. No religion is perfect, and IS built largely on mythology. For me, being a rational thinker and a believer, there is no incongruity between spirituality and logic. Christianity like all modern religions is based on a tradition of wisdom that is time-tested; maybe it doesn't always work, but the lessons are generally good. This aspect of religion is way more attractive then the mythology, which let's be honest, I can certainly get from any form of fiction. Should I be branded a heretic by my fellow Christians for agreeing that much of our religion literally is a fictionalized version of a real person?? While there are problems associated with any religion, I do not let them interfere with my relationship with my God. And I believe in the kind of God who wouldn't be offended at me laughing at some smart and seriously funny webcomix!

Thank you all for the comments. I was... hum... away, so to say, for a while (yeah, I know it's an understatement), and I was really surprised to see this little entry got so many views and comments. I hope you also visited the creator's site, HomeOnTheStrange.com (it is and was linked with both images) -- he's got many other great cartoons.

And of course I know it's called "The Doctor". When I set the title I got distracted by the "I follow the path of DOCTOR WHO" line in the first image, which was right before my eyes. Changed the title now, but the URL will have to remain (it's been linked in a number of places and it wouldn't be nice to break those links).
